Overview: This interdisciplinary course provides an introduction to core challenges in “precision” genomic medicine and public health. It will explore ethical, legal, social, and policy issues critical to effective translation of genomic knowledge, examining the rise of new technologies and practices through detailed case studies. The course interrogates a promising science while engaging in critical and constructive discussion of a number of topics, including genetic screening, prenatal testing, direct-to-consumer genetics, and race and genetics. Prof. Barbara Koenig, from the Institute for Health and Aging, is the faculty of record.


Directions for Registering: Register for Anthropology 225- Contemporary Issues. Students have the option of taking the lecture only or both the lecture and seminar. When registering for the lecture only, sign up for 2 credits and Pass/No Pass or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. When registering for the lecture and seminar, sign up for 4 credits and a letter grade.  Open to all students, there are no pre-requisites.

Videos of the lecture will be made available online. This course will be offered through Coursera during summer 2014 and meets requirements for NIH-required “Responsible Conduct of Research” training.
