UCSF Proudly Announces the 2013-2014 Presidential Chair

Professor Burke is one of the preeminent scholars today examining the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of advances in human genetics, particularly the translation of novel genomic technologies from the bench to the clinic.  Professor Burke has been named Presidential Chair, a position to encourage new or interdisciplinary program development and to enhance quality in existing academic programs. While in residence at UCSF, Professor Burke will be:

  • Teaching a new, interdisciplinary course offered Spring Quarter 2014 called, “Challenges in ‘Precision’ Genomic Medicine and Public Health”
  • Keynote speaker in the Presidential Chair Lecture Series (May 5th – 9th, 2014) with Medical Anthropologist Margaret Lock  (McGill University) and Genetic Epidemiologist Muin Khoury (CDC and NCI) 
  • Participating in seminars and working groups sponsored by CT2G

Wylie Burke, MD, PhD

Wylie Burke is Professor and Chair of the Department of Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Washington. She received a PhD in Genetics and a MD from the University of Washington. Professor Burke is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine, past President of the American Society of Human Genetics, and former Chair of the Institute of Medicine Roundtable on the Translation of Genome-based Research for Health. She is also the founding director of the University of Washington’s “Center for Genomics and Healthcare Equality” that is funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute. Her research grapples with the ethical and policy implications of genomics in medicine and public health. For more information, please visit her website.
